Types of cosmetic dentistry

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are also known as dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers. They are wafer-thin custom-made shells intended to cover the front side of teeth to advance your appearance. Dental veneers treat dental conditions like chipped teeth, slightly crooked teeth, discolored teeth, or cover spaces between the teeth. A tiny amount of enamel is eliminated during the dentist’s placement, a thin layer covering the teeth. Once the dentist places the veneers, one cannot choose not to use them or remove them.

Dental crowns

A crown covers the whole tooth. Before placing a crown, more of the tooth needs to be ground down or filled. If you have tooth decay, the dentist removes the decayed part before making the crown. They are generally made out of porcelain or acrylic that is bonded to metal to bear biting pressure. Crowns are used to treat badly decayed teeth, poorly shaped teeth, teeth that have had large fillings, chipped teeth, or cover spaces between teeth.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is the most common because it helps discolored and stained teeth. Whitening occurs after tartar, plaque, and debris are removed from the tooth’s surface, recovering their natural appearance.

Teeth become worn and stained from drinks, foods, personal habits such as smoking, and medications. A whitening procedure can be done at home or a dental office.

Dental bonding

Bonding is the procedure where tooth-colored resin is used and hardened with a special light to improve a person’s smile. Bonding can repair cracked and chipped teeth, change the shape of teeth, close gaps, or be used instead of silver amalgam fillings.

Orthodontics (braces)

Braces can correct misaligned or crooked teeth and can advance the appearance and health of one’s smile. Braces work by applying stable pressure over time to move teeth slowly into alignment. The tooth’s socket changes shape as the teeth move and as pressure is applied.

Composite fillings

If there are existing fillings, they need to be replaced due to chipping, wear, or cracking. Most people use these fillings to replace the silver amalgam fillings with tooth-colored natural composites. Their reasons may be that they are concerned over the safety of amalgam fillings containing mercury or maybe aesthetic. Composite fillings seem to wear out faster than silver fillings in bigger cavities, but they also hold up in small holes.

Dental implants

Dental implants are made of titanium. They provide a firm foundation for the bonding of removable artificial or permanent teeth. Some patients prefer having attachments on their implants to support the removable denture instead of an individual crown.
